# Codex RL-I — The Adjacency

**Adopted:** June 19, 2026

**Period:** Relational Domain

---

## Definition

An Adjacency is the cartographic relation between two Parcels that share a common Boundary within The World.

---

## The Definition

The existence of multiple Parcels within The World makes cartographic relation possible.

An Adjacency exists not to establish ownership, access, obligation, governance, value, or claim, but to describe the direct relation between neighboring Parcels.

Without Boundaries, Parcels cannot be distinguished.

Without Adjacencies, Parcels cannot be understood in relation to one another.

---

## Formal Definition

An Adjacency is the cartographic relation between two Parcels that share a common Boundary within The World.

An Adjacency is a property of the world's structure rather than a property of either Parcel individually.

---

## Immutable Properties

Every Adjacency possesses the following immutable properties:

### Relation

An Adjacency exists between two Parcels that share a common Boundary.

### Dependence

An Adjacency depends upon distinction, position, and the existence of a shared Boundary.

### Symmetry

If one Parcel is adjacent to another, the relationship is mutual between both Parcels.

### Permanence

Once established within the canonical structure of The World, an Adjacency cannot be erased, reassigned, or replaced.

### Neutrality

An Adjacency does not assign value, purpose, status, rights, ownership, access, or obligation. It merely describes relation.

---

## What An Adjacency Is

* A cartographic relation
* A relationship between two Parcels
* The condition created by a shared Boundary
* A direct neighboring relationship within BitPangea
* The first relational concept of the Cartographic Period

---

## What An Adjacency Is Not

* Ownership
* A claim
* Governance
* Territory
* Access rights
* Obligation
* Commerce
* A statement of value or purpose

---

## Foundational Principles

### 1. Adjacency Requires Distinction

Two Parcels cannot be adjacent unless they are first distinct. Adjacency depends upon the Boundary that distinguishes one Parcel from another.

### 2. Adjacency Requires Position

Adjacency depends upon the position of Parcels within BitPangea. Without position, no Parcel can be understood as neighboring another.

### 3. An Adjacency Is Not Ownership

An Adjacency describes a cartographic relationship. It does not determine who may claim, steward, govern, inhabit, access, or use either Parcel.

### 4. Adjacency Belongs to the World

Adjacencies are part of the cartographic structure of BitPangea. They do not belong to any person, institution, community, owner, or individual Parcel.

### 5. Relationship Precedes Meaning

Adjacency establishes relation, but does not assign meaning. Social, cultural, economic, or civilizational meaning may emerge later upon the Cartographic Layer.

---

## Scope

This Codex acknowledges the existence and necessity of Adjacency as a cartographic relation.

It does not establish:

* Access rights
* Movement between Parcels
* Trade routes
* Neighborhoods
* Districts or regions
* Settlement patterns
* Civilizational meaning
* Cartographic implementation

These questions remain subjects for future inquiry.

---

## Cartographic Doctrine

> Distinction enables plurality. Adjacency enables relation.
