The Discovery

In 1936 Alan Turing described the Universal Turing Machine, a mathematical model capable of performing any computable process through a single abstract machine.

This was not the invention of a physical computer. It was the discovery of the underlying nature of computation itself.

What Became Possible

Universal computation made general-purpose computers possible.

Instead of building a different machine for every task, one machine could execute different instructions, giving rise to software, operating systems, programming languages, and modern computing.
